Bayer 04 1-1 Werder Bremen: Volland scores in Korkut’s first game

A goal from German International Kevin Volland wasn’t enough to earn Bayer Leverkusen a win as the 24th round of the Bundesliga got underway on Friday night. Leverkusen, under the helm of Tayfun Korkut for the first time, drew 1-1 with Werder Bremen and have now gone three games without a win in their chase for Europe next season.

Roger Schmidt was sacked following defeats to Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund, with the club four points short of sixth place in the table. Werder’s run of three straight wins came to an end as they moved three points clear of the relegation play-off spot currently held by Hamburg.

Volland gave Leverkusen the lead with a header early on before Claudio Pizarro, playing his 200th Bundesliga game for Werder, equalised with ten minutes to go. The home side could have won it with the last kick of the game but Omer Toprak saw his penalty saved by Felix Wiedwald.
