Baxmann fires U17s to Euros

Werder Bremen’s Jano Baxmann fired the Germany U17s to a 1-0 win against the Netherlands to seal qualification to the European Championship in Azerbaijan (5th-21st May 2016).

"We are very happy to have qualified for the Euros in Azerbaijan,” said coach Meikel Schönweitz. “That was our goal and we have achieved that. Against the Netherlands the team proved they can hold their nerve. It was a very intensive match that we dealt with great concentration and passion. That we were able to put on such good performances with a man down on two separate occasions will give the team a further boost. The boys can be proud of what they have achieved during the Euro qualifiers. We will go to Azerbaijan with plenty of confidence.”

Baxmann winning goal: "A great feeling"

There was a great atmosphere even before the match had kicked off in front of the 2,643 spectators at the Paul-Janes-Stadion in Düsseldorf, and this was made even better with both teams throwing caution to the wind during the game. The first chance did not, however, come until the 21st minute, when a Jan-Niklas Beste shot flew inches wide after some delightful link-up play between Kai Havertz and Arne Maier. But the deadlock was broken shortly afterwards, when Baxmann’s effort from the right fired past Netherlands keeper Marc van Meulenhof (25’).

After the break, the young Germany side continued to control the match, Baxmann coming close from a Havertz free kick. The game intensified somewhat, with plenty of fouls breaking up the game flow. This led to a red card for captain Atakan Akkaynak after a second bookable offence. But even with ten men, Germany held on and will be at the summer’s European Championship.

“It’s a great feeling to know that we have successfully qualified for the Euros,” told Jano Baxmann. “In the last few days we have grown together as a team once again and in today’s match against the Netherlands we did all we could to achieve our goals.”
