Bastian Schweinsteiger rewrites the record books

Bastian Schweinsteiger made his 38th appearance for Die Mannschaft in a major tournament on Thursday against France and broke a record in the process. The 31-year-old has now featured in 20 World Cup games and 18 European Championship fixtures. The previous record was held by Miroslav Klose (37 games), who is just ahead of Lothar Matthäus and Italy’s Paolo Maldini (36 each).

Only one player has taken to the field more often than the Manchester United midfielder. Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo’s tally stands at 20.

Schweinsteiger is only the second player (after Ronaldo) to play in three European Championship semi-finals. He had previously faced Turkey in 2009 (3-2 victory) and Italy in 2012 (2-1 defeat).
