Barca and Ter Stegen well on the way to the final

Germany goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen and FC Barcelona took a massive step towards the final of the Spanish Cup. The goalkeeper started the first leg of the Catalan club’s semi-final in the Copa del Rey against FC Villarreal, which they won 3-1. Villarreal’s goal came from Manu Trigueros in the 48th minute after his shot went straight through ter Stegen. But the 22-year-old was in excellent form both before and after the goal, which he should have perhaps done better with.

“The goal was my fault,” said the former Mönchengladbach player, who made an incredible save in the first half. But he’s still being optimistic: “I have to forget the game now and think about the next one. I always believe in myself.”

Four-time World Footballer of the Year, Lionel Messi (41’), Andres Iniesta (49’) and Piqué (69’) were the goalscorers as Barcelona ran out comfortable winners. Brazil international Neymar wasted a chance to make it 4-1 in the 71st minute after he missed a penalty awarded for handball.

Before the game, both teams and both sets of fans observed a minute’s silence in memory of Udo Lattek, who won the European Cup Winners’ Cup during his time in charge of Barcelona between 1981 and 1983.
