Badstuber: "I'm not so unlucky"

Holger Badstuber doesn’t see himself as particularly unlucky after his most recent injury. "My body is still working. I’m feeling good and young. I am, therefore, certainly not so unlucky," said the record champions’ centre back in an interview. The 26-year-old rejected the label of "catastrophe".

After a cruciate ligament rupture in 2012, Badstuber has been out for around two-and-a-half years, recovering from that and various other injuries. On Saturday he fractured his ankle which will see him out of action for the next few months. It was a "training accident unrelated to other injuries", as Badstuber explained. It is a "tedious injury but has not devastated me". He was confident about being able to start playing again in the summer.

"That’s just the risk involved"

The Die Mannschaft centre back, however, does not have any sympathy for himself. "This is my life, my job. That’s just the risk that is involved and I have borne the brunt of it. If it happens again I will just deal with it." Maybe fans see "real life, often shown in the footballing world, which ranges from great highs to severe lows" in Holger Badstuber.

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was certainly influenced by Badstuber’s fighting spirit. "What’s happened with his injuries has been very extreme," he said, "but what I like about him is that he was immediately filled with optimism with which to face the upcoming tasks and that is wonderful."
