Badstuber delighted with first Champions League goal

Pundits have been running out of superlatives to use following Bayern Munich’s record-equalling 7-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the last 16 of the Champions League. Thomas Müller scored twice to take his goal tally to 26 and joined Mario Gomez as the top all-time German scorer in the competition. The German Champions also equalled the 7-0 win they recorded over Basel in the last 16 in 2012. With the win, Bayern booked their place in the quarter-finals for the 14th time, which is a record.

It was a particularly special night for Holger Badstuber who returned to the team after a long spell sidelined through injury. Just two days before his 26th birthday, he scored his first ever Champions League goal. It was also the first time the defender has scored in five years and only his second goal for Bayern Munich in a competitive fixture. Badstuber spoke to DFB.de about the result and the team’s next Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen on Saturday (15:30 CET).

Question: Mr Badstuber, are you surprised that you won so comfortably against Donetsk?

Holger Badstuber: They are nevertheless a very, very good team. It was not for nothing that they progressed through the group stages. They are a strong team who are often underrated – not by us, but other teams.

Question: What did you make of how the game went?

Badstuber: We were 100 percent focused going into the game and it clearly went very well for us.

Question: Are you relieved to have made it through to the quarter-finals?

Badstuber: When the tie is left hanging in the balance after the first leg and there’s still everything to play for in the second leg (0-0 in the first leg; editor’s note), it takes a real weight off your mind when you secure victory. The foul and the sending off naturally played right into our hands and we took advantage of the situation. The evening went well. We can now return home and prepare to go again on Saturday in Bremen.

Question: Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has said how pleased he was for you coming back after such a long time sidelined through injury and scoring your first ever goal in the Champions League. What do you make of the chairman's praise?

Badstuber: It’s nice to receive such positive feedback but I was just doing my job. I’ve always said that I want to repay the club for their support by putting in good performances. I’m happy when I can play my part and contribute to the team’s success. It’s my job; I’ll continue to work hard.

Question: How pleased were you with your goal?

Badstuber: It was a super feeling, one that I don’t experience very often. I didn’t have a clue how to celebrate. It was great but above all, I’m pleased for the team and the fact that we’re through to the quarter-finals. It was an enjoyable evening.
