Augsburg stay bottom after home loss to Werder

Just three days after FC Augsburg's emphatic 4-1 Europa League victory against Alkmaar, they suffered yet another setback in the league, losing 2-1 at home to SV Werder Bremen on matchday 12 in the Bundesliga. For Werder, who went into this game having lost six of their last seven games, it was a timely success as they have lifted the pressure on themselves slightly by moving further away from the relegation zone.

Half-time substitute Claudio Pizarro scored the opener shortly before the hour mark. It was his first goal for Werder since returning to his former club from FC Bayern this summer. Fin Bartels doubled the visitors' lead ten minutes later. Paul Verhaegh's converted penalty in stoppage time was not enough for Augsburg to turn the game around.

Hard-fought encounter

Augsburg were slightly on top in the first half as both teams invested a lot of energy to keep their defensive organisation. However, the hosts were unable to produce any clear chances with Werder sitting quite deep and waiting for opportunity to counterattack.

The visitors opened up a bit in the second half. A misplaced pass from Augsburg's Raul Bobadilla paved the way to the first goal, as Santiago Garcia provided Pizarro with a fine pass and the veteran striker finished the attack off clinically. Augsburg attempted to increase their pressure but Bremen's defence held firm. At the other end, Bartels doubled their advantage after a fine solo effort and a good finish. Augsburg got their consolation goal in stoppage time, when skipper Verhaegh converted a penalty to bag his fifth goal of the season. It was not enough to prevent Augsburg's eighth defeat of the campaign though as they remain in last place.
