Arsenal held to goalless draw

Arsenal have all but secured a place in the Champions League group stage with one game remaining in the Premier League. The Gunners, who included both Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker in their starting line-up, drew 0-0 with Sunderland and are still in third place.

Arsene Wenger’s side only need a point at home against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday to secure qualification. On the other hand, chasers Manchester United require three points and need to run up seven goals to make up for the goal difference and snatch third place. Arsenal are set to face Aston Villa in the FA Cup Final on the 30th May.

Ozil with the best chance before the break

Arsenal started strongly against fifteenth-placed Sunderland and Özil carved out the best chance to score in the first half. It was goalless at the break after Alexis Sánchez and Olivier Giroud also lacked precision in front of goal.

After the break, the hosts had goalkeeper David Ospina to thank for keeping the scores level. He saved from both Steven Fletcher and Patrick van Aanholt in quick succession. While Sunderland looked dangerous on the counter, it was the Giroud, Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Tomas Rosicky who created the best opportunities for Arsenal to snatch victory.
