Arsenal beat City in crunch clash thanks to Özil

A stunning performance from World Cup winner Mesut Özil helped Arsenal to a 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the Premier League on Monday night. The London side now have 38 points and are within touching distance of surprise leaders Leicester City (38).

Özil created both of Arsenal’s goals, which were converted by Theo Walcott (33’) and Olivier Giroud (45’+1). He received a standing ovation when he was replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with just 14 minutes.

Per Mertesacker captained the Gunners and completed the 90 minutes. The City goal was scored by Yaya Touré (82’) and was created by former Wolfsburg star Kevin De Bruyne.

Özil has been in scintillating form of late. He has now notched up 15 assists this season and is on course to break the division’s all-time record for the number of goals created within an individual season.
