Arp hat-trick gets U17s off to perfect start

The Germany U17 team began their U17 EURO 2017 campaign in the perfect fashion, with a 5-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina. Lars Lukas Mai got things going in just the second minute, followed shortly by Yannik Keitel doubling the lead in the 16th minute. A Jann-Fiete Arp early second half hat-trick rounded off the impressive victory. The team’s next match will be played against Serbia in Kostrena on Sunday (12:00 CEST), and the final group game will come on Wednesday (12:00 CEST) in Rijeka against Ireland.

It was extremely important for the boys to start the tournament well. We began very well and we were able to enact a lot of what we planned. We lost our way a little ten minutes before the break, but we picked ourselves back up very quickly right after the break,” said head coach Christian Wück after the match. “The fact that we scored five goals is also a sign to other teams. We have to consider the quality of the opposition of course, but we showed our quality across the board today. We can take this confidence with us into the game against Serbia.”

Two early goals, followed by a hat-trick

The young Germany team flew out of the blows, storming to a second-minute lead through Mai, who reacted fastest to convert a rebounded effort from a corner. Bosnia came close to equalising just four minutes on through Stefan Santrac, but goalkeeper Luca Plogmann stood firm. The Germany U17s did not have long to wait for their lead to be doubled. John Yeboah was a constant threat throughout the match, and was the provider of the goal for Keitel, who converted from close range.

Bosnia had a few chances between then and the break, and there were a few moment that left Germany feeling a little fortunate to have avoided conceding. However, they started the second half in the same manner they started the game. Arp grabbed his first goal with a finish from just four metres out in the 50th minute, and followed it instantly by pouncing on a mistake in the Bosnian build-up play attempts to score in the 51st minute. He rounded off his hat-trick in the 62nd minute, scoring what turned out to be the team’s final goal of a strong display.

Arp: “We could not have started the tournament better”

Jann-Fiete Arp marked the occasion in the ideal fashion with a twelve-minute second half hat-trick. He now stands at nine goals in ten appearances for the U17s. After the match he described it as a “fantastic feeling,” adding “we are a team with a lot of strength. We could not have started the tournament better. Scoring five and keeping a clean sheet, and a really strong performance to go with it, which gives us more confidence. We knew that there would not be a lot of room against Bosnia-Herzegovina – going ahead so early served us really well.”
