Argentina clash precedes Euro qualifiers

Once the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil is over, attention immediately switches to UEFA EURO 2016. Before Germany embark on the newly-structured qualifying stage of the tournament in France, however, there’s a friendly against one of football’s heavyweights to look forward to: Joachim Löw’s team face Argentina in their first match after football’s showcase event in South America. The game is scheduled to take place in Düsseldorf on 3 September.

The identity of Germany’s opponents for their first post-World Cup fixture, as well as the venues and kick-off times of their three home EURO 2016 qualifying ties in 2014, were determined by the Presidential Board of the German Football Federation (DFB) at their meeting in Frankfurt on Friday.

"Attractive proposition for the fans"

Four days after playing two-time world champions Argentina, who are currently third in the FIFA World Rankings, Germany get their EURO 2016 qualifying campaign underway against Scotland in Dortmund on 7 September. They then travel to Warsaw to face Poland on 11 October, before hosting the Republic of Ireland in Gelsenkirchen three days later. Germany’s third and final home qualifier of the calendar year is against Gibraltar in Bremen on 14 November. All Euro qualifiers involving Germany are to be broadcast by TV partner RTL for the first time. Germany’s final international fixture of 2014 will take place on 18 November, but the opponents and venue for that match will be decided at a later date.

"We fully intend to play strong footballing nations outside of the qualifying period", said DFB General Secretary Helmut Sandrock. "That’s the wish of the national coach, and it’s also an attractive proposition for the fans. We have succeeded in finding a suitable opponent in Argentina, and I’m sure we’ll play an equally strong side in our last friendly of the year."
