Angerer takes goalkeeper coaching job at Portland

Long-time Germany goalkeeper Nadine Angerer is set to stay in football after retiring from playing as the 37-year-old has accepted a job as goalkeeper coach at her former club Portland Thorns in the National Women’s Soccer League. "I am delighted to be back at Portland Thorns," said Angerer. "In the last two years the city has become my second home."

Angerer played 28 games in two year for Portland in 2014 and 2015 before ending her playing career. The 146-capped goalie was given an official send-off last Thursday in a game against England.

Angerer: "A dream come true"

"I am thankful that the Thorns have given me a chance to impart my goalkeeping knowledge. It’s a dream come true," said Angerer on the club website. Portland’s head coach, Mark Parsons, also had something to say on the matter. "Nadine will be important for the goalkeepers and the whole team. She is a winner and knows what’s needed on a day-to-day basis."

In her 19 years in a Germany kit, she won two World Cups, five European Championships and three bronze medals at the Olympics. In 2013 she also won European footballer of the year and world footballer of the year awards.
