Angerer: "Sweden have a score to settle with us"

... her role in the team: I’m enjoying every second that I have here on the pitch. At the moment I am being used as a substitute and I am completely fine with that. I am young and am still at the beginning of my international career.

... her post-match ritual: After every game I phone my parents and my brother. It’s very important to me. We talk things though and their opinions mean a lot to me.

The World Cup group phase has come to an end, the round of 16 fixtures have been set and Germany women’s will face Sweden in Ottawa on Saturday (22:00 CEST). Ahead of the first knockout match, Nadine Angerer and Lena Petermann have been answering journalists‘ questions at a press conference. Here’s a roundup of the best quotes:

Nadine Angerer on...

... their opponents Sweden: Sweden had a very difficult group, we’re not reading much into their third place finish. The match will be a tough challenge and a tight encounter.

… Germany’s iconic matches against Sweden: We played against them in the 2003 World Cup final, I was back up keeper back then. Then again in the 2007 competition, when we eventually became World Champions. And also in the semifinal of the European Championships in Sweden (2013). Those are the matches that stand out most for me. I think Sweden will feel they have a score to settle and will therefore be very motivated for the match.

... the round of 16: We definitely have the quality to win the game, but we won’t underestimate Sweden. Both teams are starting from scratch, what has happened before will play no part. It makes no difference that we finished our group with seven points and they only three.

...the team meeting after the 4-0 win against Thailand after the third group match: It’s completely normal for teams to come together on a regular basis. We always pick up on things that haven’t gone so well, but also that have gone very well. I think it’s very important that the team comes together after the group stage so everyone can share ideas and raise points that we can improve one.

... qualification for the Olympics: We’re all aware that we are also playing for qualification to next summer’s Olympics and because of that we are happy we are facing a European teams, as it gives us the opportunity to eliminate one of our direct opponents.

Lena Petermann on...

... her first two goals for the senior team: It’s a wonderful feeling to be here. The goals obviously made me very happy. Your first World Cup goal is obviously very special. My teammates were all very happy for me.

... returning to Ottawa: We’re all very pleased to be back in Ottawa and we’re looking forward to the next game. Now the World Cup is truly under way.

... her role in the team: I’m enjoying every second that I have here on the pitch. At the moment I am being used as a substitute and I am completely fine with that. I am young and am still at the beginning of my international career.

... her post-match ritual: After every game I phone my parents and my brother. It’s very important to me. We talk things though and their opinions mean a lot to me.
