Angerer on FIFA Women’s Player of the Year shortlist of three

Nadine Angerer, already named UEFA’s Best Women’s Player in Europe, is now one step away from becoming the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year. The 35-year-old German national team goalkeeper, who plays for Australian team Brisbane Roar, is on the three-woman final shortlist for 2013 as announced today by world football governing body FIFA.

"It’s just awesome, I’m extremely happy," said Angerer. "I’m very proud to be among the top three, and I know I have my team to thank for it." Germany national team coach Silvia Neid also has her fingers crossed: "For me, seeing Nadine Angerer nominated in the top three for Women’s World Player of the Year is a logical consequence of her incredible performances this year. She would be an extremely deserving winner of this award."

Fierce competition: Wambach and Marta

The other two nominees are 2012 winner and USA international Abby Wambach and Brazilian striker Marta, who has already won the award on five previous occasions. The winner will be announced at the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala in Zurich on 13 January 2014.

If she wins, Nadine Angerer will only be the second German to become FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year after Birgit Prinz, who received the accolade three times in succession from 2003 to 2005.
