An omen gives hope to HSV against Gladbach

Hamburger SV and Borussia Mönchengladbach have met 97 times in the history of the Bundesliga, but not for almost 30 years in the DFB Cup. This is about to change on Wednesday (18:30 CET) with the quarterfinal matchup. The two clubs last faced each other on 31st March 1987 in a cup match, and HSV still hold the match in good memory. The 1-0 home victory paved the way to their most recent cup triumph and their most recent trophy overall. A good omen?

HSV have only succeeded once in making it to the semi-finals this millennium (2008/09), while Gladbach have achieved the feat three times (2000/01, 2003/04, 2011/12), albeit failing to taking home a fourth title. Form favours Hamburg, who haven’t lost any of their last six competitive home games, whilst Gladbach only have two away victories in the league.

Very little points to a goal fest, given that both teams are yet to concede in their cup matches so far. Likewise, Mönchengladbach have not let in a single goal in the Bundesliga this year. After two away victories against third-tier opposition, Hamburg defeated Bundesliga competitors 1. FC Köln 2-0 in the round of 16. For the Billy Goats’ rivals along the Rhine, Gladbach, the trip up north is their first cup match-up with a Bundesliga team all season.
