An emotional farewell for Angerer and Sasic

The Deutsche Fußball-Bund (DFB) gave Nadine Angerer and Célia Sasic an official send off from the Germany women’s national side. Just moments before kick-off in the DFB women’s international friendly against England in Duisburg, manager Silvia Neid and the DFB general secretary Helmut Sandrock thanked the two international stars on behalf of everyone at DFB for their fantastic service to the national team. Both players had smiles on their faces as they received flowers and a collage of the best moments of their remarkable careers and were given a standing ovation from everyone in the Duisburger Schauinsland- Resien-Arena.

Sasic was also presented with the Golden Boot award from the World Cup 2015 in Canada where the forward scored six goals. Anja Mittag received the Bronze Boot award for her five goals at the tournament. This trio were also among the 21 Germany women’s national players who have received a medal from UEFA for playing over 100 games for their country. Neid, her assistant Steffi Jones and team manager Doris Fitschen are some of the other familiar names on the list.

Angerer with an impressive trophy collection

In her extraordinary career, Angerer played in goal for Germany a total of 146 times and in her 19 years in the national jersey she has won two World Cups (2003 and 2007) as well as five European Championships (1997, 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2013). In the Olympic games, she achieved Bronze on three occasions (2000, 2004, 2008). In 2013, the goalkeeper even won European Women’s Footballer of the Year and the Women’s Ballon d’Or.

Sasic scored 63 times in 111 games for the DFB-Women. Her biggest achievements were the European Championships in 2009 and 2013 as well as the Olympic Bronze Medal in Peking, 2008.
