Amateur and Youth Football Photo of the Year chosen

"Snapshots are always the result of hard work. The ball wasn't in play; I would have put my camera down but then this great moment happened. As a photographer, you have to be ready for moments like that; you can't wander off to the hot-dog stand", said Jürgen Fromme. The 47-year-old won first place in the "Amateur and Youth Football" category at the Sports Photo of the Year competition for his image of a stricken referee.

The moment that earned Fromme the award came about at an U-8 tournament in Essen. "The referee had been clowning about with the lads for the entire match – then he fell over. I have no idea what the young lad's name was, but he played for Beeck 07, a club from Duisburg", said Fromme, who has been a photographer for the Firo photo agency for 22 years.
