Almost a miracle in Madrid for Schalke

Schalke were one goal short of performing in a miracle in the Bernabéu. The Bundesliga side won 4-3 on the night but were knocked out of the Champions League 5-4 on aggregate. Leroy Sané and Benedikt Höwedes had late chances but couldn’t hit the back of the net.

Goals from Christian Fuchs (20’) and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (40’) were pegged back by a Cristiano Ronaldo brace (25’ & 45’+1). Karim Benzema gave Real the lead after 52 minutes but Leroy Sané levelled the scores five minutes late. Huntelaar got his second with six minutes left on the clock.

Three World Champions on the pitch

Fuchs’ powerful effort was fumbled into his own net by Casillas but Ronaldo headed home Kroos’ corner five minutes later. Huntelaar, who had previously hit the bar with an incredible volley, put Schalke in front again with his 45th European goal but Ronaldo equalised once again. Karim Benzema’s mazy run and finish saw the Spanish side take the lead for the first time on the night but Sané’s incredible long range effort on his Champions League debut gave the Royal Blues hope. With six minutes to go, Huntelaar capitalised on some poor defensive play to put Schalke in front on the night. They could have won the tie in injury time but Höwedes couldn’t beat Casillas with his volley.

Three World Champions were on the pitch: Schalke’s Höwedes was joined by Toni Kroos and Sami Khedira. The 27-year-old made his first start since the 7th February but was replaced after 58 minutes.
