Allofs: "I would rather play Bayern in the final"

Klaus Allofs, European Championship winner in 1980, as well as World Cup runner-up in 1986, would rather not be playing against FC Bayern München so early on in the competition. However, the sporting director of the current DFB Cup holders, VfL Wolfsburg believes his side have a good chance of beating the record champions at home at 20:30 CET this evening in the second round of the DFB Cup.

Question: You celebrated your third win in a row at the weekend. Are VfL Wolfsburg going into the crunch cup tie in the perfect form?

Allofs: I think we’ve started getting the results we expect to get. That these good results have come in the build-up to the Bayern game is also good.

Question: You said with cheeky grin that Wolfsburg are the favourites. How would you actually rate your side’s chances?

Allofs: We’re not going to just be a bystander in the match. We have proven many times that we can match them. There’s not much between the two sides. If we play to our qualities, it can be an open game.

Question: Is the match against Bayern perhaps a bit too early in the competition?

Allofs: I would rather have not played them until the final. When either the champions or the holders go out in the second round, it’s a shame for the competition. That said, it’s part of the charm of the competition.

Question: Robert Lewandowski scored five goals in nine minutes the last time you played Bayern. Is that still playing on the minds of the defenders?

Allofs: It’s still something we all think about, but not in a negative sense. We haven’t had any sleepless nights over it. We all need to learn from that. His goal glut has continued and it’s something for us to challenge. If Lewandowski plays, out defenders will be in a better position to deal with him.

Question: And now Arjen Robben is also back.

Allofs: That’s not such a big issue. Whether Robben plays, or Lewandowski, it makes no difference. They are an exceptional team and are always able to react in a game. Hopefully we will be able to counter that properly.
