Algarve Cup: U17 start tournament with 2-2 draw against the Netherlands

The Germany U17 national team recorded a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in their opening match at the Algarve Cup. The Dutchmen took the lead twice in this classic match-up after goals from Zakaria Aboukhlal and Daishawn Redan, but the team of DFB coach Christian Wück showed great morale and levelled the score through Dennis Jastrzembski and Jean-Manuel Mbom.

“I was impressed with the way the team came back after conceding the goals,” said Wück. “The first half went to the Netherlands; we then started to create pressure in the second half and rewarded ourselves in the end. The game was played at a high level from both sides and you could see the individual quality of all 22 players on the pitch.” Wück went on to emphasise the “great progress”, which both teams have undertaken since their two friendly encounters last year.

Jastrzembski scores and earns penalty

The pitch in the Estadio Municipal presented difficult conditions after heavy rainfall over the past few days, but both teams still managed to produce an entertaining affair. The German U17 side was put under pressure early, but handled conceding the opener after 38 minutes very well and responded immediately.

Yannik Keitel timed his pass perfectly to Jastrzembski and the 16-year-old Hertha BSC player curved the ball around Netherlands goalkeeper Fabian de Keijzer into the far corner. Just prior to this attack, Jastrzembski had been introduced to the game for the injury Robin Kehr.

Germany came out stronger in the second half, but still conceded an early goal from Redan. In the remainder of the match Germany were pushing for the equaliser and found it in the closing stages of the match after Jastrzembski was brought down in the area. Bremen’s Mbom converted comfortably from the spot.

England await on Sunday

Germany’s U17s will face England on Sunday in their second match tournament, before facing hosts Portugal on Tuesday for their final game. The tournament serves as an important preparation for the EUROs qualifying segment, as Germany are set to face Turkey, Armenia and Finland between March 23rd-28th for a ticket to the tournament in Croatia (May 3rd-19th).
