Algarve Cup: Germany opens with defeat

The German women's national team has started with a 1-0 (0-0) loss against Denmark in the Algarve Cup in Portugal on Wednesday. In Faro, DFB Coach Silvia Neid changed her starting lineup compared to a test match against China on February 28 in Freiburg on four positions. Silke Rottenberg took over from Nadine Angerer between the posts, while Jennifer Zietz replaced injured Babett Peter, Conny Pohlers played for Melanie Behringer in midfield and Martina Müller replaced injured Sandra Smisek on the attack.

The match's key moment happened right at the start of the second half, when Merete Pedersen benefited from confusion in the German defence to score the only goal of the game (46th). The World Champions continued to have problems and were held under permanent pressure by the Danish defence. Lena Goeßling came close to scoring equalizer nevertheless seven minutes before the end of regulation, when her shot hit the crossbar.

"We lacked fine tuning in controlling and passing the ball, but nonetheless we tried till the end, showing great morale. But today, it was not meant to be. We can handle this defeat quite well though", said German coach Silvia Neid.

Germany will play Finland in their next match on Friday (2.15 pm CET), before they take on Sweden on Monday (2.15 pm CET). The Finals take place on March 12.
