Advantage Karlsruhe after 1-1 draw in Hamburg

Hamburg are still in severe danger of being relegated for the first time in their 128-year history following the first leg of the Bundesliga play-off. HSV were held to a 1-1 draw by visitors Karlsruher SC, meaning the second-division side are in pole position to return to the top flight after a six-year absence, having netted an away goal.

Former HSV player Rouwen Hennings, who was in the northern club’s youth department for seven years, fired home early on to leave the hosts stunned. The 2. Bundesliga top scorer’s first-time shot after three minutes brilliantly found the back of the net via the inside of the post, with former Germany international René Adler helpless. Hamburg were able to avoid a first home defeat during Bruno Labbadia’s current spell in charge though, as Ivo Ilicevic buried a low shot in the 73rd minute to leave the tie perfectly poised for Monday’s return leg.

Things could have been much worse for HSV in truth, as KSC saw two efforts hit the crossbar in the space of ten seconds. Manuel Torres could have done better with his effort from eight yards, but Dimitri Nazarow was unlucky to see his rocket shot from long range crash back off the woodwork.
