Adrion takes over U 21 in the summer

The search has come to a successful conclusion. After terminating the contract with former U 21-coach Dieter Eilts, the DFB has now announced Rainer Adrion as Eilts’ successor. The 55-year old Adrion, currently under contract with Bundesliga-club VfB Stuttgart, will take over the team on July 1, 2009. U 20-coach Horst Hrubesch will lead the German U 21 on an interim’s basis, which includes the upcoming final round of the European Championships from June 15 to 29 in Sweden. The announcement was made following a meeting attended by national coach Joachim Löw, DFB Technical Director Matthias Sammer, DFB-President Dr. Theo Zwanziger and General Secretary Wolfgang Niersbach.

Hrubesch, a member of the 1980 European champions, will continue his assignment with the U 20-team, which competes at the World Cup from September 25 to October 16 in Egypt. He won the European title with the German U 19 last summer, the first major title for a DFB juniors team after a 16-year hiatus.

“I look forward to this new challenge. My thanks to those in charge at the VfB Stuttgart for releasing me out of my contract, which enables me to coach the German U 21”, said Adrion following the announcement. Adrion coaches Stuttgart’s U 23 in the 3. League.

Löw and Adrion have worked together before, as the new German U 21 coach had assisted Löw during his tenure with the VfB Stuttgart. They teamed up to win the German Cup final in 1996/1997. “During my stay in Stuttgart, Rainer Adrion was a reliable and highly-competent partner. I have fond memories of our triumph in Berlin and reaching the European Cup final in 1998. Rainer Adrion is exactly the right coach for this position at the gateway between our A-team and the juniors’ sector.”

During his impressive career, Adrion served as head coach for the Stuttgarter Kickers, the Spvgg Unterhaching and the SSV Reutlingen. He joined the VfB Stuttgart in July 2004.

The German U 21 faces a stiff challenge at the final round of the European Championships, as they battle two-time champions Spain and England as well as Finland in Group B of the tournament.
