Adler: “I know how amazing it is to play in Berlin”

Rene Adler has had many successes in the past. He was back in goal for Hamburger SV last Friday after being out for injury for a long period. And the former Germany international helped his team secure a place in the DFB Cup quarter-finals and was one of the best players on the pitch as his side beat 1. FC Köln 2-0. Adler shared his thoughts with the press after the final whistle.

Interviewer: Mr Adler, congratulations on getting the victory and your good performance. It was a good evening all round wasn’t it?

Rene Adler: It was an absolutely fantastic evening and one that we can enjoy. We had already done well against Leverkusen at the weekend, where we battled with 100% commitment throughout. Today we really took the game to them. We fully deserved the 2-0 victory and we could have even scored more. We also created a lot of chances. It’s brilliant to be able to say after a game that we were the better team.

Interviewer: You had several key players missing like Nicolai Müller and Lewis Holtby. Did it surprise you that your team managed to produce the best football they’ve played in a long time?

Adler: It was a chance for all the players who have not had much game time recently. They were really up for it and have put pressure on the other players, which is a good thing. We need everybody! It’s important that we play with a lot of passion. Several players with cuts or knocks sat in the changing room against Leverkusen and still carried on playing. And if somebody does have to sit out, others are there to step in.

Interviewer: How important was this success for the team in view of the rest of the Bundesliga season?

Adler: Every successful experience gives you confidence and momentum. We can use that well. We still have a lot of home games left. The aim is to win these games. We built on that today, completely irrespective of the competition.

Interviewer: Where has this newfound strength at home come from?

Adler: The coach absolutely rightly said that these home games are the basis from which we go forward. We still have a lot of games at home in the Bundesliga and need to pick up points there. With our fans behind us in such a fantastic stadium, our target has to be picking up three points, no matter who we’re against.

Interviewer: The fans were already singing, “Berlin, Berlin, we’re going to Berlin.” Are you dreaming of a cup final?

Adler: I’ve already played in the final in Berlin in 2009 so I know how amazing it is. I also know how quickly you can end up there. It’s possible with some good football and a bit of luck. But you can also be knocked out just as quickly. It’s all or nothing in the cup. That’s what makes this tournament so exciting. We’ll wait and see which team we’ll get in the draw.
