Dutch football icon Johan Cruyff has passed away. The World Cup finalist from 1974 lost his battle with cancer in Barcelona on Thursday at the age of 68. The former FC Barcelona star was diagnosed with lung cancer in October of last year.

Johan Cruyff and his Oranje lost the 1974 World Cup final 2-1 to Germany in Munich. The playmaker enjoyed three European Cup triumphs with Ajax, and was named European Footballer of the Year in 1971, 1973 and 1974 as well as European Player of the Century in 1999. As a manager, Cruyff lifted three European Cups and four La Liga trophies with FC Barcelona.

DFB vice-president Dr. Rainer Koch said today: "Johann Cruyff was and will always remain a true legend. He made his mark on football through his exceptional talent, and entertained fans all over the world with his technical brilliance. The world of football lost one of its greatest characters today."
