50 years on - the sides meet again in London

Numerous leaflets in London are promoting "The Legends: England v Germany". A selection of Germany legends face their English counterparts on Monday, 2nd May in London. The match commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 1966 World Cup Final, which England won 4-2. That match, as you may well remember, remains infamous due to Geoff Hurst’s controversial strike.

It promises to be a spectacular affair with Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman, Paul Scholes, David Platt, Sol Campbell and Jamie Redknapp in line to represent the Three Lions.

Ballack takes the armband

Germany will be captained by 98-time international Michael Ballack, who represented Chelsea between 2006 and 2010. He will be joined by Euro 1996 winners Dieter Eilts and Fredi Bobic. The World Cup 2002 squad will be represented by Oliver Neuville, Marko Rehmer and Frank Baumann, with Jens Lehmann, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Jens Nowotny, Tim Borowski and David Odonkor appearing on behalf of the 2006 squad. Additionally, Matthias Herget, Fabian Ernst, Patrick Owomoyela, Jörg Albertz, Hanno Balitsch and Marco Reich have been included in the squad. Holger Osieck, who was Franz Beckenbauer’s assistant throughout the 1990 World Cup, will manage the side.

The match will take place in of England’s most traditional stadiums: The Boleyn Ground (Upton Park), home of West Ham United. England’s home advantage is strengthened by the fact that former Hammers heroes Teddy Sheringham, Joe Cole, Dean Ashton and Trevor Sinclair are likely to feature in the game.

The Bank Holiday Monday fixture is hugely significant as it is one of the last matches to take place at Upton Park. At the end of the season West Ham United leave their traditional East London home and move into the Olympic Stadium in Stratford. Over 20,000 spectators are expected to attend the game.
