The U17s have won their final World Cup group game in India and are through to the Last 16. Christian Wück’s side beat Guinea 3-1; the perfect response to their 4-0 loss to Iran in the second group game.

The group stages end with Germany in second place, having won two and lost one. On Monday in New Delhi, Germany will face Colombia, who qualified second in Group A. Guinea missed out on qualification.

Against Guinea, Jaann-Fiete Arp, Nicolas Kühn, and Sahverdi Cetin got on the scoresheet. Ibrahima Soumah scored Guinea’s goal to make it 1-1, giving goalkeeper Luca Plogmann no chance.

Wück: “The players dealt with the pressure brilliantly”

“It wasn’t easy to react to the Iran game in the right way”, said Wück: “The players were under a lot of pressure, but they dealt with it brilliantly. We went into the game with the right attitude and supported each other. But we also know that we need to be better at taking our chances – especially in the Last 16, when the quality of our opposition will increase. Colombia will be a very difficult challenge, and one for which we will prepare for intensively.”

Dennis Jastrzembski also seemed relieved. “It is a great feeling, to know that we are into the Last 16”, said the striker from Hertha: “In Guinea, we have beaten a very good side, but I feel we just wanted it more. Our mindset was a lot better today, and we need to keep it that way going forwards.”

Early lead through Arp

DFB coach, Wück, set his team up very well: Through early pressure and effort, Germany looked to dominate possession in order to create chances. The plan worked. Dennis Jastrzembski put an opposition defender under pressure, meaning the ball fell to Arp who put the team 1-0 up.

The early lead could have given the Germany side some security, but Guinea responded well. The agile and technically strong African side increasingly started causing problems, before they managed to equalize through Soumah. Subsequently, Guinea continued to look dangerous, and Germany coulnd not really get close to the opposition’s goal. Although, that changed in the closing stages of the first half, as Germany had several chances to re-take the lead.

Kühn makes it 2-1

In the second half, Germany got off to the better start again, and after only a few seconds, had a double chance to re-take the lead. However, Guinea’s keeper, Camara, made two smart saves to deny Abouchabaka and and Nicolas Kühn.

After that, the game died down a bit, as both teams cancelled each other out in midfield. But then Arp popped up and forced the issue. As Guinea were attacking, the Germany captain stole the ball and played it through to Kühn, who put the ball past Caamara to make it 2-1.
