3-0 victory over Austria books play-off spot

The Germany U19 side boosted their chances of appearing at next summer’s U20 World Cup in South Korea, thanks to an impressive 3-0 victory over Austria in their final group game of the European Championship. Guido Streichsbier’s men will play the side who finished third in Group B in Sandhausen on Thursday (19:00 CEST), with the winner heading to the tournament.

“Obviously it feels great. The team put in a great performance. I’m happy that their effort was rewarded,” explained Streichsbier. Jannes-Kilian Horn added that, “it feels like a weight has been lifted from our shoulders.”

Germany take control early on

The DFB-Team took control early on in front of 13,328 spectators in Reutlingen. They pressed harder than their opponents and played some excellent football, however, chances were few and far between early on. Teuchert’s long-range effort was blocked after five minutes and his crafty deflection after an Ochs effort was kept out by Austria keeper Paul Gartler.

Clear shots remained few and far between throughout the opening period, with both sides proving wasteful in possession. Despite both sides getting into good positions, players seemed unwilling to take the risks necessary to stand a chance of opening the scoring.

Goals arrive after the break

Streichsbier noted this on brought Serra for Reese at the interval and the change has an immediate impact. Horn whipped in a delightful free kick into the box and Phil Neumann was on hand to smash the ball into the back of the net (50’). The lead was doubled two minutes later when Teuchert headed home after more good work from Horn.

Austria pushed harder after this double setback but failed to test Müller. Conde von Gartler and Serra attempted to grab a third for Germany but to no avail. The rout was completed with two minutes to go when Gökhan Gül celebrated his 18th birthday in style by heading home another Horn delivery.
