2019 U21 European Championship qualification draw hands Germany intriguing match ups

June this year will see the German U21 National side compete for glory in the European Championships in Poland. Before that, however, there is small matter of qualification for the 2019 tournament in Italy and San Marino. The draw for the qualification phase of that tournament took place in Nyon, Switzerland, today with Germany drawn in Group five alongside Israel, Norway, Ireland, Azerbaijan and Kosovo. A total of 54 teams, including debutants Gibraltar and Kosovo, will battle it out in nine groups for 11 automatic qualification spots.

Qualification begins in the week commencing 20 March 2017 and ends in the week of October 8 2018. The nine group winners qualify automatically, while the four best second placed teams with the best record against the top five teams in the group will play off against each other between 12 and 18 November. Italy have already qualified as hosts, but co-hosts San Marino must go through qualification.
