2-1 win not enough for Bayern

Record champions Bayern München fell at the last hurdle on their road to the Champions League final. Pep Guardiola’s team beat Atlético Madrid 2-1 on the night, but the Spaniards prevailed on an aggregate score of 2-2 thanks to their away goal, meaning Bayern exit the competition in the semi-final for the third consecutive year.

Xabi Alonso put the Bavarians ahead in the 31st minute with a deflected free kick. But it was downhill from there: three minutes later, Thomas Müller missed a penalty. Shortly after the break, Antoine Griezmann punished Bayern on the break with the equaliser, leaving them in a position of needing two goals to win. In the 74th minute, Robert Lewandowski put Bayern back in front. Ten minutes later, Manuel Neuer kept his team’s hopes alive after denying Fernando Torres from the spot.

The final in Milan on the 28th May will see Atlético Madrid take on either their local rivals Real Madrid or Manchester City, who will play the second leg of their semi-final tomorrow in the Bernabeu. The score going into the game from the first leg in Manchester is 0-0.
