1996 European Champions meet in Paris

Germany will have high-profile support in their second EURO 2016 group game against Poland on Thursday evening (21:00 CEST). The 1996 European Champions gathered for the 20th anniversary of their title victory at the invitation of the DFB in Paris and will watch the game together at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis.

The European Champions spent the afternoon with the DFB delegation, led by President Reinhard Grindel, on a boat restaurant on the Seine. After the game, they’ll go to a hotel in the centre for a get together.

"It’s great that within this context we were once again able to thank the 1996 European Champions," said DFB President Reinhard Grindel. "What links our current team with them? Then, too, we had a team in which everyone worked for each other. And coming from Lower Saxony, you’ll accept that I have a special place in my heart for 96ers."

Most of the 1996 European Championship winners accepted the invitation, including Fredi Bobic, Jens Todt, Marco Bode, Stefan Kuntz, Thomas Helmer and Stefan Reuter. However, former manager Berti Vogts and his captain Jürgen Klinsmann, who is currently managing USA in the Copa América, couldn’t be present. "Berti and I would have been delighted to have been there," said Klinsmann by video message. "Have fun! Enjoy the evening and we’ll all keep our fingers crossed for the lads this evening." As Hungary assistant coach, Andreas Möller is currently at EURO 2016 and Matthias Sammer was absent for health reasons. Oliver Bierhoff and Andreas Köpke, who work as general manager and goalkeeping coach for the current Germany side, want to welcome their former teammates before the game.
