1. FC Köln head to Berlin already

In the second round of the DFB-Pokal, 1. FC Köln head to the Olympiastadion to face Hertha BSC on Wednesday 25th October at 18:30 CEST. When doing the draw, Carolin Kebekus – a FC Köln fan – apologised to Köln’s head coach for the tricky draw live on air but Peter Stöger took the draw in good spirit, even though there are easier fixtures than heading away to a fellow Bundesliga rival: “You always dream of playing in the cup in Berlin and now we can.”

The two founding members of the Bundesliga have met on five occasions in the DFB-Pokal. Most recently, the two teams battled it out in 2002 as Köln came out 2-1 to go into the semi-finals, before eventually being knocked out by Bayer Leverkusen. In the Bundesliga, the two teams have come across one another 54 times. The latest clash in March of this year saw FC Köln run out 4-2 winners thanks to a hat-trick from Anthony Modeste. However, Köln’s last win in the Olympiastadion came eight years ago in 2009.

Hertha head coach: “A difficult but manageable task”

“If the Hertha fans come out in force and support us, it’ll be a tough but manageable task”, said Hertha head coach Pal Dardai with confidence before the upcoming cup game. Hertha’s sporting director, Michael Preetz, was also hopeful before the tie: “We’re glad we have a home game. We want to win and progress into the last sixteen.”

1. FC Köln still await their first win in the Bundesliga after eight games and are currently bottom of the pile in the league table but a win in the DFB-Pokal could give them a new lease of life. Köln’s only win so far this season came in the first round of the DFB-Pokal as they eased past fourth tie side Leher TS Bremerhaven 5-0. Hertha progressed into the second round by beating third division Hansa Rostock in a much more close game where the deadlock was only broken in the 86th minute in a 2-0 win.
