Women’s DFB Cup final: Wolfsburg vs. Potsdam

VfL Wolfsburg will play 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam in the final of the women’s DFB Cup on 1st May in Köln. Wolfsburg needed extra time to overcome SC Freiburg in their semi final (4-2) and will play in the final for the second time in the club’s history – the first time, back in 2013, they won the tournament. For their opponents, 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, the final in May will be their seventh and they have won the cup on three occasions, most recently back in 2006.

In their semi final, Wolfsburg took the lead just after half time through Nilla Fischer’s header in the 48th minute. However, SC Freiburg didn’t sit back and replied with an equaliser in the 61st minute through Jenista Clark. That was how the game finished after 90 minutes so the sides went into extra time. The key moment of the match came in the 101st minute as Freiburg’s Clark handled in the box to give away a penalty but she also saw red for a second bookable offence. Goalkeeper Benkarth saved the penalty from Lina Magull but the game began to open up.

Only four minutes later, Yuki Ogimi fired Wolfsburg back in front (105’). It looked as if the game had been settled when Caroline Graham Hansen scored again for Wolfsburg in the 108th minute but Anja Hegenauer put Freiburg back in with a shout after she scored from a corner only four minutes later. However, they were unable to find the all-important equaliser and Anna Blässe scored just before the final whistle as the game finished 4-2.

Potsdam first side through to the final

1. FFC Turbine Potsdam were the first team to reach the final on 1st May after their 2-1 win over 1. FFC Frankfurt. It was Frankfurt who started the brighter, with Germany international Celia Sasic going close in the 20th minute as she fired into the side netting. But Potsdam came into the game and had a great chance to open the scoring in the 35th minute but they had three shots all blocked by their opponents.

However, they did finally take the lead in the 43rd minute as Asano Nagasato fired past Frankfurt goalkeeper Jessica Fishlock. They doubled their advantage in the 56th minute through Pauline Bremer. Sasic had two further chances to pull a goal back for Frankfurt but she was unable to do so. They did, however, give themselves a glimmer of hope as Veronica Boquete scored from close range in the 88th minute but it was too little too late.
