Anticipation mounting ahead of Women's DFB Cup final

The Women’s DFB Cup final is looming large on the horizon. With the clash between VfL Wolfsburg and 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne only nine days away (1st May, 17:15 CEST), the anticipation is slowly but surely building.

10,286 tickets have been sold so far. "15,000 has always been our realistic target. Anything more than that would obviously be super," said DFB director Steffi Jones, who will replace Silvia Neid as Germany Women’s manager in 2016. She’s expecting the final to be an “attractive, exciting match between two top teams." Mayor of Cologne Dr. Ralf Heinen is anticipating an atmospheric event. "In Cologne, the people are filled with passion and enthusiasm ahead of the match. In our jam-packed sporting events calendar, the Women’s final is a definite highlight," he remarked.

Anticipation among the finalists

The finalists are also looking forward to the atmosphere in Cologne. "We play in front of 1,500 spectators in the league, but then here there could be a crowd of 15,000. It’s always a very special atmosphere in Cologne," commented Potsdam’s Inka Wesely. VfL’s Viola Odebrecht added to her rival‘s remark. "The spectators come to see us. Players want to prove themselves in front of such a big crowd," she stated.

Wesely and her team are completely focussed on the cup final. "Both teams are equally matched. Since this our only chance to win a title this season, we’ve already been preparing for the match for the past two weeks. We’re highly motivated. It’s the greatest experience to be in a cup final," she announced.

The match is also an encounter with her past for Odebrecht. "Potsdam was my home for a long time and I feel a connection with the people. These matches always have a certain charm. The cup is just as important to us as other competitions," she reflected.
