Freiburg and Sand reach semi-finals again

SC Freiburg and der SC Sand have reached the semi-finals of the DFB Women’s Pokal, just as they did last season. Freiburg booked their place in the last four by beating 1. FFC Frankfurt 2-0 and have reached the semi-final stage of the competition for fifth year running. The team from Willstätt in Baden Württemberg, who reached the final last year, overcame Werder Bremen in the quarter-final 1-0.

The opener for Freiburg came from Hasret Kayikci after link-up play with U19 Germany International Giulia Gwinn in the seventh minute. Sandra Starke made sure of the win in stoppage time. It was the visitors who had enjoyed more of the play in the first-half at the Mösle Stadium, but it was Freiburg who took the lead. After the break, it was the fourth placed side in the Women’s Bundesliga who had the better of the chances. Frankfurt had won the four previous cup meetings between the sides; last in the 2009/10 season, winning 6-0.

In the semi-final, the team from Freiburg also have a chance to end a run. The club has missed out on the final in each of the last four years. In three of those years, they’ve been knocked out by VfL Wolfsburg.

A possible opponent for Freiburg is Sand. In their first match under new trainer Richard Dura, the favourites, who have lost their last three in the Bundesliga, had to be patient. The Austria international Nina Burger struck the winner in the 78th minute. Northern second division side Werder, who had eliminated Potsdam and Hoffenheim in previous rounds, didn’t let the huge difference in league position affect them. Burger was denied a second goal in stoppage time as she hit the post.

Wolfsburg can still dream of a DFB Pokal success after defeating Bayern 2-0 to reach the last four for the third successive season. Bayer Leverkusen make up this year’s semi-final quota after beating northern second division side BV Cloppenburg 2-0.
