Bremen surprise Leverkusen, BVB progress

Werder Bremen have reached the semi-final of the DFB Cup after beating Leverkusen in their own ground 3-1. Werder, who have had a poor season outside of the cup competition, prevent the Werkself from winning their first title in 22 years, putting them out in the quarters. Bremen haven’t been in the quarters since 2010 when they made it to the final but lost out to Bayern. In 2009, Werder won the competition against Leverkusen in the final, Mesut Özil scoring the only goal of the game.

Turn-around

Javier Hernandez put the home side into the lead after 22 minutes. Galvez brought Kießling down inside the area and the Mexican striker finished in style. Werder fought back, however, Santi Garcia equalising just nine minutes later. A penalty on the other side saw the dismissal of Wendell just before Pizarro converted from the spot to put Werder in front.

The second half was a scrappy affair as 10-man Leverkusen tried to get a grip of the game while the Werder defence were happy to soak up the pressure. A counter-attack late on saw Bremen double their lead as Grillitsch finished to secure the victory and Werder’s progression to the semi-finals.

Reus shines in Dortmund win against Stuttgart

Borussia Dortmund follow Bremen to the semi-finals thanks to a 3-1 win against Bundesliga rivals Stuttgart. Dortmund are now one step closer to reaching their third final in a row. Meanwhile, Kevin Großkreutz, who played 236 games for BVB, would now face them in a Stuttgart shirt.

Dortmund take early lead

It took just five minutes for the favourites to take the lead as Reus fired home. Aubameyang put the ball into the middle for Gündogan but he didn’t connect. It ran through to Reus at the back post who then finished from a very tight angle.

Stuttgart were only behind for 15 minutes, however, as they pressed forward and the ball fell to Rupp outside the box. His shot deflected off Mkhitaryan and looped over Burki. Aubameyang restored BVB’s lead with a strike from inside the area assisted by Reus. The lead was then doubled later on in the second half when Mkhitaryan found himself in front of an empty goal. He headed in with ease to confirm Dortmund’s spot in the last four.
